I know I said I would post about my Hawaii adventures once I returned back to Champaign, IL, but I slacked off on the blogging. I'll be defending my dissertation in about four months so I've been spending my time reading, writing, and editing papers. So by the end of the day, I don't really feel like writing more. But, I have so many food pictures from Hawaii that I had to start posting again!
I'll first start with
Dairyu, a noodle shop that reopened in Kalihi. It used to be located in the small shopping complex across Washington Intermediate in town. This was my FAVORITE place for
mabo tofu yakisoba. Since Dairyu closed a few years ago, I have never found a restaurant that served a mabo tofu that was as good. When I was younger, this was the restaurant that I would choose to go when my family celebrated events.
My parents thought that the mabo tofu tasted different from the original Dairyu. But I thought that it tasted great! It was slightly saltier than I remembered, but still ono. Plus I had some extra mabo tofu sauce leftover and boiled some noodles and ate it the next day.
And for you vegetarians, Dairyu is very accomodating. My aunty folks (who are vegetarians) said that the cooks at Dairyu are more than willing to make menu items vegetarian and with less oil.
My aunty also mentioned that during peak dinner hours, the place is packed. So do what Mike and I did, we called in the order and had take-out.
If you're looking for a new restaurant to try in Hawaii, definitely check out Dairyu!
