Leonard's Malasadas

After consuming beignets in New Orleans, I had mentioned to K. that she had to try malasadas(Portuguese doughnut) and andagi (Okinawan doughnut)

K.'s mom had seen a commercial about Leonard's and on our way to Shokudo, we stopped by Leonard's to pick up some of these wonderful fried goodies. We tried both the original and the filled malasadas. The August flavor of the month was Lilikoi (passion fruit). The filling was warm and oozed out of the doughnut and was delicious! Although we all liked the lilikoi filled malasada, we all agreed that you just cannot mess with the original warm malasada!

oh yum. When we were last back in Hawaii, I tried to introduce my husband to Liliha bakery coco puffs, but they were closed the one day we were on that side of the island. I was so bummed! That's the dessert I miss most from hawaii.

hi diana! i love those coco puffs! Too bad you missed them. They now have green tea coco puffs, but I haven't tried them yet.

One day, while manning the Hawaii Club booth in college, a friend and I outlined the "perfect" order to eat the different malasada "flavors". I'm pretty sure it was something like: haupia (mildest flavor so you can enjoy it), dobash (nice contrast to haupia), regular (to cleanse the palate after sweet dobash), vanilla cream (another sweet explosion), flavor of the month.

We had malasadas at Leonard's when we visited Hawaii last month. They were **fantastic**.
