Champaign Restaurants~Potbelly's

On the UIUC campus there are so many sandwich places to choose from. There's Subway, Jimmy John's, Silvermine Subs, Potbelly's, Quizno's and McAllister's. We also have the Pita Pit, Zorba's, and Niro's Gyros, which kind of qualify as sandwich places too.
Over the past few years, I think I've narrowed my favorite sandwich down to Jimmy John's tuna sandwich. I'm the type of person that used to think people who purchased tuna at Subway were silly and were wasting their money, but that's for another blog post. Today, I'll introduce you to my second favorite sandwich restaurant, Potbelly's.
The two things that makes Potbelly's unique is that 1)they toast their subs and; 2)all the subs cost the same price. Okay, so Quizno's toasts their subs, and all the Jimmy John's sandwiches are the same price, so Potbelly's isn't THAT unique. But I guess I also like Potbelly's because their milkshakes are yummy.

When all the sandwiches are the same price ($4.25?) I find it hard to purchase the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. If it's a chose between a sandwich that consists of Skippy peanut butter and Smucker's jam, WHY would you purchase this over something called "A-Wreck" which is loaded with salami, roast beef, turkey, and ham? My friend told me that the pb& j was really good and worth it. So one day I took the leap and bought it (well, not really, I had won a coupon for a free sandwich).
So what's the verdict? It was quite delicious with the warm peanut peanut and jelly oozing out of the warm toasted bun. But, no, I would not purchase the peanut butter and jelly sandwich again unless I wanted dessert. But, I associate pb&j with a semi-traumatic childhood experience so I rarely eat them in the first place.
(Long story short-I went skiing with my family at Lake Tahoe when I was younger and was having the worst day ever trying to learn how to ski with a group of other kids. When we took our lunch break, we were fed pb&j and I had never eaten a pb&j sandwich in my life! I saw my mom and my aunty eating their delicious lunches and started crying. The next day I was enrolled in private skiing lessons and eating normal food. Yes, I was a spoiled wuss.)

I think that any of the other sandwiches would keep you fuller longer. Here's what I normally order, the turkey sandwich on whole wheat.
This is what Mike ordered and what most people order; A-Wreck. I think it's because it's the sandwich with the most meat in it.

We used to go to a place called the Picklebarrel when I was in college in Colorado - it sounds kind of like this place, only the sandwiches were more expensive. I love the name of the "A-wreck" sandwich - sounds like what I would make of the whole thing when I tried to eat it...meat falling out of the bread all over!

A-Wreck is my favorite sandwich! If I'm ever in Colorado, I'm going to Pickelbarrel! Any suggestions?

Looking at your sandwich pics and the sandwich I ate yesterday, I notice how the fillings are always unevenly distributed and spill out the "side-cut" of the bread. How I long for the old, Subway "trench" cut bread that kept all the fillings in the sandwich, evenly distributed for my noshing pleasure
