Foodbuzz 24, 24, 24: The Bread Company

19:00 - The Bread Company
The Bread Company is definitely a place I've been dying to try. Lauren talked it up for about a month before one of my visits to UIUC because we were going to go on a date there, and then went there with some friends before and decided that it was good, but we didn't need to go together....and I've been waiting to go ever since. As you can tell from the picture, we acctually made it to The Bread Company a little ahead of the time slot. We had actually tried to go earlier in the day at 2:00pm, but we found out that they didn't serve fondue until dinner, at 5:00pm. We had to rearange our schedule, so that we could still make it to our reservations at the fancy places. Lauren's foodie friend Aaron also joined us on our adventure. He's got an extensive knowlegde of all things food, so it'll be great to have him along for the home stretch where we taclke the really fancy places.
The Bread Company is known for their fondue. I pass by this restaurant a few times a day since it's located a few blocks away from my lab. Every time I walk home I see couples sharing fondue..
We decided to get the classic cheese fondue, and crab cakes. The fondue was grueyere cheese. We're pretty sure they mixed in some kind of wine. It was pretty good. We could dip potatoes, bread, broccolli, carrot, or radish. And we all got our own cute fondue fork. The fondue was kept warm by a sterno underneath the pot that they light for you. Realistically, I'm more of a cheese-whiz guy, but this was really good. Erican and Aaron both agreed that it was a little weird to dip potato, and that it didn't really adhere properly. I agree, but in my mind, cheese good, potato good, cheese potato good.
The crab cakes were served on a wild-greens salad with some kind of basalmic vinegar dressing. I thought it was tasty. I'm pretty sure it was canned crab meat so that takes it down half a notch, but it was much better than any other canned crab meat crab cake that I've had.
